How to measure for a blanket

Stand your horse square. Using a soft tape (or a length of string), start at the center of the chest, run it around the widest part of the shoulder, along the side and to the center of the tail. That number in inches is the blanket size in US sizing.

Blanket size = chest-to-tail measurement, rounded up to your brand's next size

Most US brands come in 2-inch steps (70, 72, 74…). Some, including several European brands, use 3-inch steps (69, 72, 75, 78…). UK sizes use the same measurement in feet and inches, so a 74 is 6'2". Some European makers size by back length in centimeters instead; check their chart before ordering.

What weight to use

Fill weight is measured in grams: a sheet has none, lightweight is about 100 g, midweight 200–250 g and heavyweight 300 g and up. A horse with a full winter coat usually needs nothing above about 40–50°F. Clipped horses have lost that insulation and need a blanket roughly one weight heavier at every temperature. Horses that are thin, old or wet need more; overheating is as real a risk as cold, so check for sweat under the blanket.

Frequently asked questions

Why is blanket size one measurement instead of height or weight?

Blanket fit is about body length and shape along the horse's topline, not overall size — two horses can be the same height but need different blanket sizes if one has a longer back, which is why the chest-to-tail measurement is the industry-standard way to size a blanket.

Do all blanket brands use the same sizing?

Sizes are broadly standardized across most brands, but small differences in cut and fit exist — this calculator gives the size to start with, and it's worth checking that specific brand's size chart before ordering, especially near a size boundary.

What if my measurement falls right between two sizes?

Round up rather than down — a blanket that's slightly too big is far more comfortable and safer than one that's too tight, which can rub, restrict movement, or put pressure on the shoulders.
