How to convert Fahrenheit and Celsius

°C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9
°F = °C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32

Temperature is not a simple multiple, because the two scales start at different points. Water freezes at 32 °F and 0 °C and boils at 212 °F and 100 °C. A horse temperature of 101 °F is 38.3 °C.

A horse's vital sign

An adult horse at rest normally has a temperature of about 99 to 101.5 °F (37.2 to 38.6 °C). A foal's range is slightly higher. Excitement, exercise and hot weather can raise it a little. A reading above the normal range, a fever together with other signs such as poor appetite or dullness, or a reading well below normal deserves a call to your veterinarian.

Weather and horses

Temperature also drives blanketing, water and work decisions. The equine heat index adds the temperature in Fahrenheit to the relative humidity, so use Fahrenheit for that rule. For cold-weather decisions, see the blanket finder.

Where these numbers come from

Standard conversion factors based on international definitions (the international foot, avoirdupois pound and U.S. gallon). Horse figures are typical ranges from veterinary and extension guidance, and they vary by horse. See how we calculate and the disclaimer.

Frequently asked questions

About 37.2 to 38.6 °C for a resting adult horse, which is 99 to 101.5 °F.

What is 101 °F in Celsius?

About 38.3 °C. Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit value and multiply by 5/9.

When should I call the vet about my horse's temperature?
