How this quiz works

The Breed Match finder asks about your main riding goal, how experienced you are and whether you need a horse built to carry a heavier rider. It scores the answers and points you to a Quarter Horse, Paint Horse, Arabian or a draft or draft cross.

Why these questions

Breeds were developed for different jobs, and those jobs show up in temperament, build and stamina. A breed gives you a head start on what to expect, but the individual horse matters more than its breed.

What the quiz cannot see

It cannot see a particular horse. Temperament, training, health and soundness vary within every breed, so meet the horse, ride it more than once, and have an experienced person and a veterinarian help you evaluate it. Draft and draft-cross proportions can also need different tack. The First-Horse Readiness quiz can help if you are new.

Before you decide

Meet the individual horse. Ride it more than once, in more than one place, and ask to see it handled, tacked up and trailered. Ask an experienced person and your veterinarian to look at conformation and soundness, and check the registration papers if they matter to you. Breed is a starting point for what to expect, and the horse in front of you decides.
