Recommended bit size

How this calculator works

To measure a horse for a bit, use a piece of string or a bit-measuring tool placed in the corners of the mouth where the bit would sit, then measure that length. The correct bit size adds a small clearance (commonly about 1/4 inch total) to that measurement so the bit doesn't pinch the corners of the mouth or hang so loose it shifts excessively.

Where these numbers come from

Standard bit-fitting guidance used across tack shops and saddlery guides. Bit fit also depends on mouthpiece style and the individual horse's mouth conformation -- a proper fitting, ideally checked in person or by a knowledgeable fitter, is more reliable than measurement alone for a final decision.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure my horse's mouth for a bit?

Use a piece of string or a bit-measuring tool placed where the bit would sit in the corners of the mouth, mark where it meets on each side, then measure that length -- most tack shops can also do this fitting for you.

What happens if a bit is the wrong size?

Too small and it pinches the corners of the mouth; too large and it can shift side to side excessively, both of which affect comfort and the horse's response to rein cues.

Does bit size change between mouthpiece styles?

The base sizing (corner-to-corner plus clearance) stays similar, but thicker or thinner mouthpieces can feel different in the same nominal size -- this calculator gives a sizing starting point, not a full fit recommendation.
