How transporters price a trip

Estimate = miles × rate per mile × horses (+50% for a box stall) + layovers + health papers

US commercial horse transport commonly runs about $1.25 to $3.75 per loaded mile. Short local hauls cost the most per mile; long cross-country runs on shared trailers cost the least. A box stall, which lets the horse turn around and lie down, costs more because it takes the space of about two standard stalls.

Crossing state lines requires a health certificate (CVI) from a vet within about 30 days and a negative Coggins test, typically $200–500 together. Air transport is a different world, commonly $8,000–30,000.

These rates are typical market ranges; replace them with real quotes when you have them. Budget the rest of ownership with the cost of owning a horse calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Why do short trips cost more per mile than long ones?

Loading, fuel to get the rig moving, and the driver's time are largely fixed regardless of distance, so those fixed costs get spread over fewer miles on a short haul — which is why transporters commonly charge a higher effective per-mile rate for shorter trips.

Why does a box stall add 50% instead of just extra floor space?

A box stall takes up the room of multiple standard stalls on the trailer, so the transporter is losing that other capacity — the higher charge reflects lost capacity on the rig, not just the physical footprint of one horse.

Is hauling yourself always cheaper than hiring a transporter?

Not necessarily once everything is counted — fuel, your own time, wear on your truck and trailer, and the value of a professional handling loading and health paperwork can close the gap considerably, which is exactly why this calculator shows both figures side by side.
