Blanket Finder
Does my horse need a blanket, and what weight?
Whether your horse needs a blanket -- and what weight -- depends on their coat, clip status, your climate, and shelter access. Answer a few questions and we'll match you to the right choice, or browse the table below.
| Result | Best for |
|---|---|
| No Blanket Needed | For a healthy horse with a full winter coat and shelter access |
| Lightweight Sheet (No Fill) | For mild, damp conditions or a clipped horse needing light protection |
| Medium-Weight Turnout Blanket | For moderately cold, wet winters with turnout time |
| Heavyweight Turnout Blanket | For genuinely cold climates and horses with little natural coat |
How this quiz works
The Blanket Finder asks five questions: whether your horse is clipped, how cold your winter gets, whether the horse has shelter, whether it is a senior or underweight, and whether wet and windy weather is a bigger issue than cold alone. It scores the answers and points you to no blanket, a lightweight sheet, a medium-weight turnout or a heavyweight turnout.
Why these questions
A horse with a full winter coat and shelter usually keeps itself warm, which is why the first questions are about the coat and shelter. Clipped, older and thin horses lose heat faster, and wet and wind take away warmth more than cold alone, so the quiz weighs them separately.
What the quiz cannot see
It cannot feel your horse. A winter coat can hide weight loss, and a blanket that is too warm can cause sweating, so check under the blanket and check body condition by touch. Use the Blanket Size Calculator for sizing, and ask your veterinarian about any senior or underweight horse.
Before you decide
Check the horse, not just the forecast. Feel the ribs and the base of the neck, look for sweating under the blanket and watch whether the horse shivers or seeks shelter. Waterproofing and fit matter as much as fill weight, and a poorly fitted blanket rubs the shoulder and withers. Have a lighter and a heavier blanket on hand for swings in temperature.
