Supplement Needs Checker

Does my horse need a supplement, and which kind?

Does your horse actually need a supplement, and if so, which kind? This is general information, not a substitute for your veterinarian's guidance -- answer a few questions for a starting point, then talk to your vet about your horse's specific situation.

ResultBest for
No Supplement Likely NeededFor a horse on good-quality forage and a balanced feed
Joint SupplementFor horses in regular work or showing early joint stiffness
Hoof SupplementFor horses with weak, cracking, or slow-growing hooves
Vitamin E SupplementFor horses with limited access to fresh green pasture

How this quiz works

The Supplement Needs Checker asks whether a specific concern prompted the question, whether your horse is already on a balanced feed or ration balancer and how much work it is in. It points you to no supplement likely needed, a joint supplement, a hoof supplement or a vitamin E supplement.

Why these questions

Supplements are often added before the diet is checked. A horse on good forage and a balanced feed usually already gets what it needs, and the quiz checks that first. The remaining results suit specific situations: regular work and stiffness, weak hooves or a hay-only diet with little fresh pasture.

What the quiz cannot see

It cannot diagnose anything. Stiffness, lameness and poor hooves can have medical causes, and supplements do not replace a diagnosis. Talk to your veterinarian before adding a supplement, even one that looks harmless, and check the Feed Calculator first.

Before you decide

Start with the diet. Have your forage and feed reviewed, and compare it with what your horse needs using the feed calculator. If you add a supplement, add one thing at a time, so you can see its effect. Keep a record of products and doses, check the label for what it contains, and stop and call your veterinarian if the horse gets worse.
