How this quiz works

The Saddle Type & Fit Checker asks what discipline or style you ride, whether you spend long hours in the saddle and whether you need a horn for roping or ranch work. It points you to a western saddle, an all-purpose English saddle, a dressage saddle or a jumping saddle.

Why these questions

Saddle types support different positions. A western saddle spreads weight for long hours and work, a dressage saddle has a deep seat and straight flap for a long leg, a jumping saddle has a forward flap for shorter stirrups, and an all-purpose saddle compromises between them.

What the quiz cannot see

It cannot see how a saddle fits your horse, which matters more than the type. A saddle that does not fit can cause soreness and behavior problems, so have a qualified fitter check it. Use the Saddle Seat Size Calculator for the rider's seat size.

Before you decide

Fit the saddle to the horse first. A qualified fitter checks the tree or bar angle, the clearance over the withers, the panel contact and how the saddle sits with a rider on board, and rechecks as the horse changes with age and work. Then check seat size for the rider with the saddle seat size calculator. Do not buy a saddle online without a return option.
