About HorseCalcs
HorseCalcs is a free set of calculators, converters and finders for people who own, ride and care for horses.
Who runs this site
HorseCalcs is run by Chris Jensen, an independent individual based in Florida. It is not a company. I started it because information people were looking for was missing or hard to find, and I wanted the numbers behind horse care in simple tools that show their method. Where the site says “we”, that is me. You can reach me at rusticreckoner@gmail.com or through the contact page.
Why this site exists
Keeping a horse involves a long list of small calculations and decisions: how much hay a horse needs, how much sand an arena takes, whether a trailer is within the tow rating, what a blanket size means, which feed or bedding suits a particular horse. The answers usually exist in veterinary guidance, university extension bulletins and manufacturer data, but they are written for professionals and scattered across many documents. HorseCalcs puts them in one place, with the working shown.
What you will find here
- Health & Nutrition: body condition, feed, hay, weight, age, deworming and heat.
- Tack & Fit: bit, blanket and saddle sizing, rider weight and horse height.
- Barn & Land: pasture, arena footing, bedding, fencing, towing, shipping and the cost of owning a horse.
- Breeding: foal color and foaling dates.
- Converters & Lookups: the unit conversions horse owners use most.
- Finders: 21 short quizzes that help you choose between options, such as hay, feed, bedding, a bit, a fence or a trailer.
Where the numbers come from
Each calculator explains its method on the page. Where a figure comes from a published source, the page says so: the National Research Council’s Nutrient Requirements of Horses for feed and hay, the Henneke body condition scale, the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) for deworming and the equine heat index, and manufacturer ratings for towing. The how we calculate page explains our approach and its limits. Prices and typical amounts are examples, so replace them with your own numbers.
What this site does not do
- It is not veterinary advice, and it does not diagnose or treat any condition. Read our disclaimer.
- It does not sell feed, tack, trailers, insurance or services, and it does not take payment to favor a product.
- It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any breed association, manufacturer, retailer or equestrian organization.
Corrections
Horse care changes as research and guidance change, and horse people often spot a mistake before we do. If a result looks wrong or a page is out of date, use the Report an Issue form and name the calculator. If you want a tool that is not here, suggest it.
