How this quiz works
The Arena Footing Finder asks three questions: what discipline you ride, what your footing budget priority is and how wet your climate is. It scores the answers and points you to sand, sand with fiber or an additive, or stone dust.
Why these questions
Footing is a trade-off between cushioning, firmness, drainage, cost and upkeep. A jumper needs cushioning that reduces impact, a rider who works at a walk and trot may prefer something simpler, and a wet climate needs drainage. The budget question matters because additive footing costs more and stone dust is often cost-competitive with sand.
What the quiz cannot see
It cannot see the base under your arena, your drainage or the size of the area. A good footing on a poor base will not perform. Use the Arena Sand Calculator to work out quantities and cost, and talk to a footing supplier or an experienced arena builder before you buy.
Before you decide
Ask suppliers for a sample and for the weight per cubic yard of the exact material. Look at the particle size, because coarser sand drains better and finer sand compacts more. Plan for dragging and watering, since dust control matters in dry climates, and price the base as well as the surface. The result pages compare the three options side by side and say when each is not the right fit.
