Should I Breed My Mare?
Is breeding realistic for me and my mare?
This is general information to help frame a conversation with your veterinarian, not a substitute for a professional breeding soundness evaluation. Answer a few questions for a starting point, then talk to your vet about your mare's specific situation.
| Result | Best for |
|---|---|
| Likely a Reasonable Candidate | Your mare's age, health, and conformation profile suggest breeding is worth a serious conversation with your vet |
| Needs a Vet Evaluation First | Some factors you've indicated suggest a veterinary evaluation is an important first step before considering breeding further |
How this quiz works
The Should I Breed My Mare? finder asks about your mare's age, any known reproductive health concerns and whether she has had a recent breeding soundness exam. It points you to either likely a reasonable candidate or needs a veterinary evaluation first.
Why these questions
Age, reproductive history and a recent exam are the first things a veterinarian looks at. The quiz is intentionally cautious: even a favorable result is a reason for a conversation with your vet, and an unfavorable one is a reason for an exam, not a verdict.
What the quiz cannot see
It cannot examine your mare, and it is not a recommendation to breed. Consult a veterinarian who handles reproduction, and count the whole cost of breeding, foaling and raising a foal. The Foaling Date Calculator becomes useful only after that decision is made.
Before you decide
Make a list of what you would need: a veterinary breeding soundness exam, a stallion and a stud fee, care for the mare during pregnancy, a safe place and plan for foaling, vaccinations and veterinary care for the foal, and years of training before it can be ridden. Ask your veterinarian about risks for your mare in particular, and be honest about the costs.
